and water balance in insect eggs, ion and water transport across epithelia and the physiology of reproduction. This is an excellent volume, well edited and well documented with references useful to a wide range of basic biological scientists. The contributors have two things in common: they have accepted the eminent suitability of insects as vehicles to elucidate principles in cellular physiology and have shared, for varying periods of time, an association with Sir Vincent B. Wigglesworth who pioneered in the field of insect physiology at Cambridge.

Factors influencing the pattern and intensity of myocardial 18F-FDG uptake in oncologic PET-CT imaging

Introduction:Myocardial 18F-FDG uptake is highly variable in oncologic whole body 18F-FDG PET/CT studies, ranging from quite intense to minimal distribution. Intense or heterogeneous myocardial 18F-FDG uptake is undesirable as it may interfere with the visual or quantitative evaluation of tumoral invasion and metastases in pericardium, myocardiu...

CURRENT TOPICS Cardiac Metabolism: Its Contributions to Alcoholic Heart Disease and Myocardial Failure

Changes in cardiac metabolism in myocardial failure and after alcohol ingestion are discussed. The main effect of alcohol ingestion is loss of cardiac contractility. Since heart muscle does not contain alcohol dehydrogenase, its toxicity is probably the result of a direct toxic effect of ethanol and acetaldehyde on the myocardial cell, possibly involving various membrane systems. Alcohol inhibi...

Effect of the thyroid state on myocardial contractility and ventricular ejection rate in man.

SUMMARY Although the circulatory changes in various thyroid states are well known, the alterations of myocardial contractility of hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism have remained controversial. The changes in the length of the ejection time (ET) and isovolumic contraction time (ICT) are used as indicative of alterations in inotropic state of the myocardium. Isovolumic contraction time, ejection...

Bacterial DNA induces myocardial inflammation and reduces cardiomyocyte contractility: role of toll-like receptor 9.

AIMS Myocardial function is severely compromised during sepsis. Several underlying mechanisms have been proposed. The innate immune system, i.e. toll-like receptor (TLR) 2 and 4, significantly contributes to cardiac dysfunction. Little is known regarding TLR9 and its pathogenic ligand bacterial DNA in the myocardium. We therefore studied the role of TLR9 in myocardial inflammation and cardiac c...

Contractility and ventricular systolic stiffening in hypertensive heart disease insights into the pathogenesis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction.

OBJECTIVES We sought to compare left ventricular (LV) systolic stiffness and contractility in normal subjects, hypertensive patients without heart failure, and patients with heart failure and preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and to determine whether LV systolic stiffness or myocardial contractility is associated with the rate of mortality in patients with HFpEF. BACKGROUND Arterial load is...
